The third Monday of February is recognized annually as Louis Riel Day. Held February 17th, 2025, this day is celebrated in Manitoba as a day to honor the life and legacy of Louis Riel, a Métis leader, politician, and founder of the province of Manitoba.
Louis Riel was a prominent Métis leader known for his role in defending the rights and culture of the Métis people. Throughout his life, Riel led two resistance movements against the Canadian government, the Red River Resistance and the North-West Rebellion, to fight for Indigenous and Métis rights. Further, Riel’s leadership was instrumental in the creation of Manitoba as a province in 1870 and his vision of a Canada that respected the rights of Indigenous and Métis people continues to influence the country today.
Louis Riel Day is an opportunity for Manitobans to celebrate Métis culture, history, and contributions to Canada. It is a time to reflect on Riel’s role in shaping the province and to recognize the ongoing efforts to preserve Métis identity and rights. This day also serves as a reminder of the broader struggles Indigenous communities have faced in Canada and the importance of reconciliation.
There are many community events such as cultural performances, educational activities, and community gatherings taking place throughout the province to honor Riel’s legacy. By observing Louis Riel Day, Manitobans pay tribute to a leader who fought for justice, equality, and the recognition of the Métis people in Canada.
